The Role of College and Certifications in Cybersecurity Careers

In today’s fast-evolving cybersecurity landscape, the debate between the value of a college degree versus professional certifications is more heated than ever. Are traditional four-year degrees becoming obsolete in the face of rapidly updating certification programs? Do hiring managers care more about your ability to persevere through college or your up-to-the-minute skills from industry-recognized certifications? Our recent discussion with Lead Technology Evangelist, James Stanger of CompTIA and our own Jason Dion of Dion Training sheds light on this issue, providing crucial insights for anyone looking to break into the cybersecurity field.The Value of College EducationContrary to popular belief, mostly sewn by his own frequent “college bashing” as Jason puts it, he is not against college education—in fact, he holds a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and several graduate certificates. He emphasized that understanding what college is doing for you is crucial. The main reason hiring managers value a four-year college degree isn’t necessarily the specific knowledge gained, but rather the ability to learn and persist through a challenging program. Jason says “The key thing to realize is that employers value the degree because it shows you can stick with something difficult for four years.”One of the limitations of college education, however, is the lag in updating textbooks. When Jason pursued his first master’s degree in IT and information assurance about two decades ago, contemporary topics like cloud computing and software as a service were absent from the curriculum. This delay is due to the time it takes to incorporate new developments into college textbooks. For example, Jason says the textbooks he used in college didn’t mention cloud or software as a service because those were new concepts at the time. It often takes around five years to get new information into college textbooks. That’s why certifications, which are updated more frequently, can be more relevant. Certifications, such as CompTIA’s Security+, are updated every three years, ensuring that the material is current and relevant. This makes certifications a valuable asset for demonstrating up-to-date knowledge and skills to potential employers.Stanger says "Certifications give you the currency to say you know the information as it exists today."Skills-Focused HiringThe conversation also touched on the growing trend of skills-focused hiring. The White House’s Skills First initiative, which CompTIA actively supports, emphasizes the importance of hiring based on skills rather than traditional educational credentials. This trend recognizes the value of non-traditional and alternative workforces. Stanger commented “We’re seeing a trend towards recognizing the importance of skills-focused hiring. While some employers still prefer four-year degrees, there’s a growing appreciation for practical skills and alternative qualifications.”In cybersecurity, practical skills are crucial. For instance, in pen testing, the ability to write comprehensive reports is as important as technical hacking skills. Understanding how to communicate findings and recommendations to different audiences—whether technical teams, board members, or IT departments—is essential. For example, Stanger said “The first pen testing job I got, they said, 'James, you’re great at hacking, but we all hate to write, and you know how to write.' Proper reporting is a critical part of pen testing and security analytics. You need to be able to communicate effectively with various audiences.” Proper reporting is a critical part of pen testing and security analytics. Without accurate and detailed write-ups, the technical work becomes ineffective.In the cybersecurity field, both college education and certifications have their place. Problem Management: The business will employ techniques like Pareto analysis and fishbone diagrams to look at the underlying causes  of recurring patterns of similar incidents. Through this, they can identify the source of the problem, such as GPS and mapping errors from an outdated system, inadequate training for delivery personnel, or inventory management issues from partner restaurants.3. Change Management: The team's recommendations will include improving delivery staff training programs, integrating the company's inventory management system with partner vendors, and updating GPS and mapping software. The strategy calls for evaluating the possible effects of these adjustments on expenses and schedule in addition to enhancements to customer happiness and delivery accuracy.4. Service Level Management: The company will review Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with partner restaurants and delivery personnel to ensure they align with the new processes. Following implementation, monitoring and reporting will be done to make sure the service levels adhere to the new requirements.5. Continual Service Improvement (CSI): After implementation, the company regularly reviews performance to measure the impact on delivery accuracy and customer satisfaction. In order to find any unresolved issues, customer input is consistently sought after, and when necessary, partner agreements, app features, and training programs are continuously modified.6. We’re excited to announce that Business Enabled Information Security (BE INFOSEC) has joined forces with Dion Training Solutions!At BE INFOSEC, we’ve built a reputation on passion and commitment to helping students succeed in cybersecurity. As part of Dion Training Solutions, we are excited about how this next chapter will grow our student experience and the success that both our students have come to expect! For those that don’t know, BE INFOSEC began in 2013 when Brandon and Evelyn Spencer launched what was then called Cyberactive Security. Back then, we were hoping to establish a government contracting company with some friends in the industry, but that never happened. Being deep in our careers and not ready to leave our secure positions, we realized it wasn’t quite the right time to take that leap. Instead, Cyberactive Security remained a project in the background, while we were waiting for an ideal moment or idea.In 2015, driven by a lifelong passion for teaching, Brandon hoped to join the faculty at my alma mater, the University of Denver. However, a lack of formal teaching experience quickly closed that door. That’s when he stumbled upon a platform called Udemy (maybe you’ve heard of it!). He saw an opportunity not just to teach but to help students in a different way. In 2016, he released his first course, Successful Security Career, which helped thousands of students break into the field and grow. From there, we saw an even greater need in the community. I remembered my own challenges with the CISSP certification—one of the most respected but challenging credentials in the industry.What if I could package all the things I wish I could have learned and saved myself years of studying, and thousands of dollars? If we could develop a course to make the CISSP journey easier for others, we could have a lasting impact. So, in 2016, we created what would become BE INFOSEC’s flagship course, our CISSP certification training. It has since supported thousands of professionals in achieving their CISSP certifications.From 2016 to 2019, we continued working full-time in IT and cybersecurity as BE INFOSEC quietly grew into a successful learning platform. By 2019, Evelyn made the courageous decision to leave her career and dedicate herself fully to the business. With her passion for business, marketing, and student support, she became invaluable in allowing us to expand our reach and ensure every student felt supported on their path. We continued operations with Evelyn full-time, and Brandon part-time as he continued his career in cybersecurity. However, in April 2024, we finally decided it was time to go all-in on BE INFOSEC. Highlighting self-taught experience on a resume or portfolio can be a challenge, but it is not impossible. In a competitive job market, standing out is essential. A good way to do this is to focus on your accomplishments rather than your qualifications. This means being specific about what you have achieved and the skills you have developed throughout your studies.It is essential to make it through the initial filter, as hiring managers only spend a few seconds looking at each resume. The average hiring manager will look at any individual resume for around 6-60 seconds. So you have less than a minute, and most times less than ten seconds to get their attention. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that the resume is easy to read and includes only relevant information. Using bullet points is recommended, as this makes it easier for the hiring manager to scan the resume quickly. A good rule of thumb to follow is that for each place you have worked, you should have no more than three bullets. If you can’t answer technical questions about something you claimed to be familiar with, it shows that you were not honest about your experience, and that can harm your chances of getting the job.Remember that a resume is just the first step in the hiring process. Once you make it to the interview stage, you have the opportunity to showcase your skills and let your personality shine. Be prepared to answer scenario-based questions and discuss your achievements in detail. Be honest about your experience and do not exaggerate your skills. If you don’t have experience with a certain tool or technology, it’s okay to mention that you’ve heard of it or have some knowledge of it, but be prepared to talk about what you do know.
